Getting to Know Apophyllite
First discovered in the beginning of the 19th century by RJ Hauy, Apophyllite is known as a clear or white silicate stone as well as a member of the Silicate family. The name Apophyllite is derived from the Greek word combination of “apo” which means away from and “phyllos” which translates to leaf, together the name directly means “to leaf apart.” This name is in reference to the way Apophyllite tends to peel or flake apart much like a leaf when it is exposed to high temperatures. This is known to occur due to water loss in its structure. An alternative name for Apophyllite is Zeolite. However, even with the name Apophyllite is not considered to be a member of the Zeolite family, instead it is known to be a member of the Phyllosilicate family.
Apophyllite clusters and Apophyllite crystals can be found in various locations around the world such as India, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Norway, South Africa, and even the United States! However, the most well-known locations for these Apophyllite minerals are found in Jalgaon, India, the Hartz Mountains of Germany, Kongsberg, Norway, and Mont Saint Hilaire in Canada. These Apophyllite minerals can be found within the cavities of volcanic rocks as well as within rocks surrounding a hot spring. Apophyllite can at times be mined from a secondary mineral in vesicles within basalt or other forms of volcanic rocks.
Along with being found in a variety of places, Apophyllite can be found in various colors such as Clear Apophyllite, Green Apophyllite, and Pink Apophyllite. In addition to the diversity of colors, Apophyllite can be found in different variations such as Apophyllite Stilbite and Apophyllite Chalcedony to name a few! In fact, regardless of difference of color and shape, all forms of Apophyllite share interchangeable chemical structures and properties.
