Petrified Wood is a term utilized for fossilized wood. The name is derived from the Latin word "petro" which translates to rock or stone and the word "wood" which directly translates to "rockwood." The way petrified wood is formed is when a tree dies it begins the process of fossilization or also known as petrification. This is due to little amounts of mineral deposits that fill the cells of this organism. This process almost always occurs underground. The minerals can come from groundwater, lakes, or oceans. They trickle into the pores of the tissue which in time slowly creates crystals within. The process continues until the cavity is completely filled. When this process occurs enough in an area, the forest is then dubbed a petrified forest.
